Fall Haul Out

DEFINITION
It has been a full season, and the Sail Chicago Rhodes 19’s have seen their usual high volume of use. And, due to excellent pre-season maintenance and the summer maintenance program, the boats are sill in solid shape and ready for continued use. Let’s keep them that way through the hall-out procedure until they are safe on their trailers in their winter storage location.

All maintenance teams should be represented by at least 50% of their team members: this provides enough people to make the work easy, go quickly and each team can support fellow members in not making unnecessary work for another team.

Power washing at the crane immediately upon the lift out, before setting a boat on a trailer is critical. If not, a huge amount of unpleasant work must be done later, before scheduled maintenance can begin. Zebra mussels will have set up house-keeping on the keel or other below water line locations and, thanks to zebra filtering, creating our lake’s great clarity , there will be lots of green stuff on the bottom , keel and rudder.

Take all our mooring lines and shackles off the Park District’s mooring ball.

Trailers should be ready with tie downs to safely transport the boats from the harbor to the winter storage location.

The Haul Out boat handing has all the challenges cited in the section on spring launch (please read this). Un-informed or inattentive boat handling and trailer handling can cause damage and saddle your fellow members with more work or major damage from haul-out instead of their efforts invested in quality improvements for all to enjoy.

ALERT/WHY

  • Each team should have representatives with that team’s standard Survey form for the boats. Having at least 50% of each team’s members participate gives that team a solid appraisal of the scope of work they will need and how to staff and time line their work for the winter maintenance program
  • Power washing at the crane immediately upon the lift out, before setting a boat on a trailer is critical eliminates a huge amount of unpleasant work that would otherwise have to be done latter.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE

  • Large group- mix of half very experienced / half less experienced or novice. Both Haul-Out and Lanch are fun and social, so come out!
