WELCOME to the Sail Chicago Rhodes Maintenance Manual

Maintenance Mission- Sail Chicago

GROUP OWNERSHIP-Our boats experience a "life time" of use every single sailing season, compared to a typical individual who owns a boat from youth to old age!

HIGHEST QUALITY- Maintenance Standards are established to live to up the level of intense use our club boats experience.

RELIABILITY- hundreds of our skipper members deserve to be confident of safe use of our boats every time they go out, whether to instruct a class of students, when they take family or friends out, for their own pleasure cruising or testing their racing skills in competition. Good maintenance is a prerequisite for safe boat handling.

NO MAKE WORK - Any substandard maintenance work will quickly become obvious when the boats go into the water and will inconvenience the enjoyment of many of our members. No one should perform uninformed maintenance work which does not meet quality standards because it will simply mean that it will have to be redone.

FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY - Our club's financial health is predicated upon 100% of our Rhodes ready for extensive use during the entire season without breakdowns that are due to unchecked or substandard maintenance. Boats out of service represents a critical loss of income.

ENJOY SOCIAL AND EDUCATIONAL TEAM WORK- Promote personal growth through team work as part of a comprehensive educational approach to the nautical arts. All experienced members are encouraged to mentor newer members to share wisdom and experience in a social environment. Just as in sailing, your really need to do it to learn it and apprenticeship is powerful for maintenance.

TAKE PRIDE- Take it upon your self to become informed and as capable as you can be: learn from the best and DO THE BEST! Take advantage of the comprehensive educational scope of sailing knowledge which includes how a boat is put together and maintained to learn new skills and qualify for new maintenance functions.

GOAL- To have the Sail Chicago Maintenance Program be recognized as such a standard of excellence that Maintenance Teams are solicited for its PAID expertise by other Rhodes Class boats, allowing the Maintenance Program to generate significant income to help us upgrade the quality of our winter maintenance program and formalize the educational elements of maintenance as part of our comprehensive nautical training program.
