Shields Welcome to Shields sailing where many of Sail Chicago's friendliest and most active members are found. Current Shields sailors include many of our instructors, maintenance team leaders, and those who have created, lead and coordinated much of what makes up Sail Chicago. The Shields is ideally suited to enhance and develop your skills as a sailor. It has the feel and stability of a big boat, with a big rig and sail plan. Yet it is still a pure sailboat with a large open cockpit, all the sail controls, and the simplicity of a small boat. It has the classic, elegant lines of a 12 Meter America's Cup yacht, all within its length of 30 feet. Most of all, it is fun! More and more members are finding out how much fun it is to take out the large roomy Shields with friends for a day sail! Shields sailing is based at beautiful Belmont Harbor with convenient parking as well as access to public transportation and the lakefront bicycle path. At this cozy harbor there are 10 different fleets of "one-design" boats. This adds up to hundreds of people sharing the same kind of sailing fun with active Sail Chicago members!
