Instruction

Sail Chicago has taught thousands of adults (18 years and older) to sail since our program began in 1958.

We provide competent, thorough instruction at affordable prices on a variety of sailboats. We are a not-for-profit educational and recreational community sailing organization, operating entirely on the volunteer efforts of our members. You must be a member of Sail Chicago to enroll in any instructional class.

Dryland consists of two classroom sessions (2 hours each), which prepare you for Basic and Intermediate Sailing lessons. All new students are required to take Dryland.

Basic and Intermediate Sailing lessons are aboard our Rhodes Fleet, stable yet lively 19 foot sailboats kept at Montrose Harbor and Monroe Harbor in downtown Chicago. Our instructors are experienced, Sail Chicago certified sailors, many of whom are US SAILING Basic Keelboat Instructors.

Dryland, Basic and Intermediate Sailing lessons are designed to be taken consecutively as a package. If your goal is to become qualified to rent and sail our boats on your own by obtaining a Sail Chicago Skippercard, we encourage you to enroll in all three classes at the same time because classes fill up early.

If you have sailed before, you may qualify to bypass Basic or Intermediate sailing lessons. Go to Previous Sailing Experience for further information.

Besides Montrose and Monroe Harbors, Sail Chicago has a boat at Belmont Harbor and provides instruction in Advanced Sailing Skills, Racing, the Shields, and our Motor Cruisers. Click on a link to learn more about all the instruction opportunities Sail Chicago has to offer.

Sorry, all 2008 on-the-water classes have been filled.

Classes tend to fill up quickly in the spring. You can still join Sail Chicago and participate in our other activities.
