Summer Maintenance Program (SMP)

Sail Chicago's fleet is in excellent condition on launch day. But frequent use, weather, and accidents throughout the summer result in boat, gear and equipment problems. These conditions affect everyone who uses the boats for rentals, instruction, racing cruising, and community service. The SMP goals are: to keep the boats in a safe and usable condition; to address and resolve any boat problem in a timely manor; and to equitably share the burden of Summer Maintenance work. To achieve these goals, we have the Summer Maintenance Program (SMP).

Who is Required to Participate?
Every member is required to participate in all three parts of the SMP process. With everyone helping, each member's participation is kept to a minimum.

Part 1. Pre-sail Checklist.
Before any sail, the skipper of record must check the boat and equipment condition using the Pre-sail Checklist. This ensures that any problem will come to the attention of the skipper.

Part 2. Reporting a boat problem:
Email Dean Hackenberg (preferred) or call SMP Hotline 312- 409-9000 before the end of the day you become aware of the problem. Your call is the first step to ensuring the boat returns to a safe and operable condition.

Part 3. Every member must register for one week of SMP:
The SMP service requirement is in addition to the Annual Service Requirements. All members must register for a week of SMP (see sidebar) and be available to work during that week. Members will not be able to rent sailboats or participate in any sailing programs as a member until they have registered. Any member who is unavailable to fulfill their SMP service commitment will be required to re-register for another week of SMP. While the Rhodes 19s are in the water, SMP service personnel assist with part replacement and boat repair. Each Rhodes 19 has a manager. You will be contacted by a manager if your services are required for SMP.

How to Register For SMP Service
