The TellTale Octoer 2020

Sail Chicago Tell Tale
Issue 10: October 2025

With Chicago's beautiful weather continuing non-stop, it's hard to believe our time on the water for 2025 is complete. Luckily our end of season dinner is around the corner, followed by great fun to be had during winter maintenance. Thanks to all volunteers who made this summer yet another amazing sailing season.  — Meighan Depke, Editor

Board Elections

It's time to vote for new members of our Board of Directors. This is your opportunity to make your voice heard and select the people who will represent you in leading this community we all care so much about. Voting is open to all current members. Ballots will open on Thursday, October 16 and stay open through the end of the Annual Meeting on October 23. All members will be e-mailed a link to their ballot, so please look for that.

Silent Auction Donations

Donations are needed for Sail Chicago’s annual Silent Auction to be held at our end of year dinner. All proceeds are used to fund Sail Chicago’s Scholarship Program, which provides free sailing courses to diverse scholarship recipients. We are seeking new and unused boating or sailing-related items that can be auctioned off at the event. Please contact Emily Wilt at social@sailchicago.org for items to donate.

Thanks to Andrew Cutler for this beautiful end of season photo taken during a quiet Monday evening sail.

Maintenance Report

As for today, all Colgates have been de-rigged. Four boats remain in the water and will complete their river trips on Tuesday morning, after which they’ll be transported to their winter storage locations.

The two cruisers will remain in the water for about another week as their boat teams begin river trips. Two Rhodes are also starting their river trips soon, and the Ideals will be heading to Montrose for trailering back.

While many members see this as the end of the sailing season, it’s actually the start of the maintenance season. Over the coming week, we’ll be removing gear, taking inventory, and winterizing boats. After a short lull, we’ll begin preparing for spring as soon as the weather allows.

All members are encouraged to participate in maintenance yard work—it’s a great way to contribute and ensure volunteer hours are met for 2025.

A special thank-you to all the boat & specialty teams, the Colgate maintenance committee, and members who helped with unstepping masts, de-rigging, and fueling. Your hard work has made this season a success.

Mariner's Report

As we approach the end of the year, the Mariner Committee is preparing for the Annual Meeting and year-end dinner on October 23. The program will follow a similar format to previous years, with a few additions. The Community (DEI) Committee this year hosted two external organizations, PALS and ROW, as well as member-only sails for Women on the Water, BIPOC, and LGBTQ sails. This year, we’re introducing two awards presented at the annual dinner:

The John Lemon Award: This annual award is named after John Lemon, a past Sail Chicago sailor and transformative leader. For 2025, a small committee has chosen the honoree and runner ups for this volunteer award.

Partner of the Year Award: Recognizes our top partner, with this year’s honoree being Columbia Yacht Club.

Volunteer Time

Still need to meet your service time for 2025? Looking for additional hours? Below are some end-of-season opportunities to help out before our volunteering season ends on December 31.

Help get our boats ready for the winter.  Once we get the boats to the yard, there's work to be done to safely store them for the winter months.

Help solicit business donations for Sail Chicago's upcoming auction. This is an easy way to volunteer...just tap into your existing network and business favorites. Many businesses see auctions as a great way to get new bodies through their door and are happy to give a coupon or free service.

To sign up for any of these opportunities, complete the Volunteer Signup Form or contact the Volunteer Team at volunteer@sailchicago.org.

BKI Achievements

Sail Chicago had two instructors pass the U.S. Sailing Certification: Basic Keel Boat Instructor Exam (BKI) in September — Shawn Joseph and Andrew Rostad. The exam takes place over three days and requires demonstration of teaching ability and sailing skills. The OTW exam required them to single hand a Colgate 26 through a crew overboard pickup. It’s quite something to do all alone! Join me in congratulating them on their big accomplishment!

The TellTale September 2025

Sail Chicago Tell Tale
Issue 9: September 2025

Another day on the water results in a balloon rescue by the Telltale team! Editor Emeritus Steve Vandervoort and his daughter Lise joined Editors Anders Carlson and Meighan Depke to tackle some September wind. Our boats are still int he water, so enjoy September, and rescue some balloons! Hope to see you all at our last Happy Hour of the season, Sept 18 at Island Party Hut!  — Meighan Depke, Editor

Run for the Board!

Would you like to take a turn on the tiller that steers our organization? Do you have ideas that you know will make Sail Chicago better? Do you think there's a point of view missing in our leadership, and that's yours? Then run for the Board!

Board membership is open to all Sail Chicago members in good standing, and we encourage everyone that wants to run for a board seat to do so. We have seven seats coming open, and anyone is welcome to run. If you are interested in running, here's how:

Complete the candidate application form
Have another returning member complete this nomination form

Nominating members must have been a Sail Chicago member for at least 12 months. Multiple people can nominate you, but only one is needed. That's all there is to it! Applications and nominations must be submitted by Sunday, October 5, 2025 to qualify for the election.

Single-handed Sailing Returns

The On-the-Water committee has worked with the Rhodes and Ideals skippers to establish new guidelines for single-handing and additional equipment has been purchased for the Rhodes to ensure that skippers will be able to return to the boat should they fall out.

With these updates to our rules and systems, the board has authorized the resumption of single-handed sailing, effective immediately.

Make-up Skipper Check-outs

For those who received a Plan of Improvement (PoI) during Skipper Check-outs, don’t be discouraged. Keep sailing, connect with other skippers, take advantage of Tiller Times and continue to build your confidence and refine your skills. The season is not over yet! Make-up Check-outs are available on:

Saturday, September 27th and Wednesday, October 1st.

If these dates don’t work for you, please reach out to your instructor or email us at leadinstructor@sailchicago.org to explore other options.

Volunteers Still Needed

It's starting to feel like the end of the sailing season is just around the corner.  But our volunteering season doesn't end when sailing does!  Do you still need to meet your service time for 2025? Are you looking for additional hours? Below are some end-of-season opportunities to help out before our volunteering season ends on December 31.

Help unstep Colgate masts and transport boats to the boatyard in October. Unstepping the masts takes several hours on a Saturday or Sunday and many hands are needed but no experience is required. Come see how we lower a mast! After lowering the masts, the Colgates are taken down river to the Canal Street boatyard. Crews are needed to make the two-hour trip on weekday mornings.

Help get our boats ready for the winter.  Once we get the boats to the yard, there's work to be done to safely store them for the winter months.

Social Committee volunteers are needed to help with upcoming events. Extra hands are needed to help with the end-of-season dinner on Thursday, October 23.

Racing News

Sadly, another sailing season is drawing to a close. But fear not, we will keep racing til they rip the last Colgate out of our dead-cold hands. Starting September 3, we will transition from our standard windward/leeward format to old school crib races. I hear there are folks who prefer this! I love diversity, in all its varied forms.

Join us as we have fun and learn. Speaking of which, so far this year we have two new foredeck specialists and one new racing skipper. If you want to get in on that action, drop us a line anytime. We're here to make that happen.

Notes from the Dock

Best practices to help keep our fleet and facilities running smoothly:

Check Fleet Status Before Sailing: Before heading out, all skippers should log into the Sail Chicago website to check the fleet status. This real-time report includes updates from skippers who sailed before you. It’s the best way to stay informed about any issues—or whether a boat might be out of commission—so you can plan accordingly or switch boats if needed.

Parking Pass Accountability: Skippers are responsible for the parking passes they use or lend to their crew. Always track by noting when a pass is taken and returned. If a pass goes missing or you notice a recurring issue, please DM “Shawn of the Lake” via Slack.

Monroe Trailer Visit Log: Please record all visits to the trailer in the logbook on the aft wall. Note the purpose of your stop and any items/parts taken. This helps manage inventory and track usage. And just like our boats, let’s keep the trailer clean and organized. Please take a moment to tidy up before you leave.

In Memory of Jack Shubat

The maintenance crew of Priorities is saddened to pass along news of the recent passing of our long-time crew member Jacob (Jack) Shubat.

Jack passed away on July 25 in the care of his family in the St. Louis area following a brief illness. A retired mechanic with United Airlines, Jack brought his skills to the care of the engines on the cruisers Priorities and Emotional Rescue.

Sail Chicago members wishing to pass condolences to the family may do so by contacting Kenn Sinko, whose email address is listed in the Sail Chicago member directory.

Become a Tiller Time Skipper!

We’re seeking skippers for Sail Chicago’s Tiller Time program. The program’s mission is to provide meaningful practice for current students outside of the regular class structure, allowing them to improve their sailing skills and advance to skipper status. As a Tiller Time skipper, you become a vital link in this process. There are several advantages to being a Tiller Time skipper. They include:

— Sharing your love of sailing with committed and enthusiastic students
— Spending more time on the water without having to schedule a private sail
— Making new friends and sailing buddies
— Helping you decide if you’d like to become an instructor
— Completing five Tiller Times as a skipper fulfills your annual service requirement

To learn more and to find out if you’re eligible to become a Tiller Time skipper, contact Steve VanderVoort at tillertime@sailchicago.org.

Priorities Wins Second Place at Lighted Boat Parade

Thanks to everyone who helped Sail Chicago participate in the 2025 Boat Parade on July 12 in Monroe Harbor. The creativity and teamwork that day helped Sail Chicago win second place and $1500 that will be used to help pay for next summer's Priorities boat slip. Whether you assisted with the planning and logistics, decorating of the boat, music and costumes, or simply showed up with enthusiasm to cheer us on—your role was vital. It was inspiring to see such teamwork, reflecting the very best of what our Sail Chicago organization can accomplish together!

Sail Chicago Supports PALS on the Water

On July 31st, Sail Chicago proudly joined forces with neighboring organizations—Chicago Yacht Club Foundation, Columbia Yacht Club Sailing School, and Chicago Harbors/Westrec—to welcome participants of the PALS program (palsprograms.org/chicago) aboard for short sailing trips around Monroe Harbor. While strong winds kept us close to shore, the spirit of the day soared high.

PALS is an inspiring nonprofit that designs summer programs pairing individuals with and without Down syndrome in one-to-one friendships. Participants came from across the country—and even internationally, including a young woman from London—to spend a week exploring Chicago. Sail Chicago contributed volunteers as skippers and first mates, helping to bring the joy of sailing to all.

This event was more than just a sailing experience. It was a meaningful exchange between people from all walks of life. One participant shared that photos from the sail would be part of his “Congratulations Project” letter—an initiative where individuals with Down syndrome write heartfelt letters to new or expecting parents of a child with the same diagnosis. As PALS puts it, these letters aim to “inspire, encourage, welcome, and most importantly, congratulate new families.”

A big shoutout to Shawn Joseph for helping coordinate Sail Chicago’s involvement. The cross-club collaboration added to the camaraderie—we had Chicago Yacht Club sailors aboard Columbia Yacht Club Colgates with Sail Chicago volunteer skippers all working together.

Experienced Sailors Accelerated Process

Sail Chicago welcomes everyone to our membership and a large part of our organizational focus is to introduce people to sailing and teach them how to be outstanding sailors. But Sail Chicago also welcomes experienced sailors! We insist that each new member go through our Skipper qualification process by taking our Skipper Prep class. This ensures that all members are well-acquainted with our boats, our procedures, and become properly oriented to Monroe Harbor.

However in rare cases, this requirement may be abbreviated for an individual upon the recommendation of the Instruction Team. You can review our Skippering Exception Process to learn more.

Racing News

The New Skipper Journey

Last year, I attended our Skipper-to-Skipper happy hour and was asked to say a few words. I gave three bits of advice for our new skippers and I hope they are worth repeating this year.

First, make friends and go sailing! My first year as a skipper, I was fortunate to hit it off with another board member, Daniel Hazlett. We sailed together a dozen times that summer, and I learned so much from him. It helped that Daniel is one of our instructors and a great sailor, but most of what I learned was to trust my instincts, to continue to practice, to be prudent, to try things out and observe what happens, and to keep learning.

My second piece of advice is to not just sail, but to reserve boats as the skipper. I've talked with many new skippers on MCO's, and every one of them says the same thing—it feels very different to be the person in charge of a boat and its crew. You feel the weight of that responsibility, and that shapes your judgment. And careful judgment is what makes you a better sailor.

Which brings me to my third piece of advice: own your mistakes. Even the most experienced sailor can be humbled by wind and waves. This happened to me last week on an MCO I was hosting. The winds suddenly jumped from about 6 knots to 18 knots, and before we had a chance to heave-to and reef, I executed a series of tacks that nobody in my boat, including me, was comfortable with. So own your mistakes. Ask your fellow sailors and crew what they would have done differently. Report incidents when they happen. These are the best ways to learn. Sail Chicago is a learning community and as sailors, we're committed to spending our lives learning how to do this amazing thing even better.

 — Gerry Stacy, Board Chair

Single-Handed Sailing Pause

Upon recommendation of the Safety Standing Committee, the board of directors is pausing all single-handed sailing activities, effective immediately, to allow for the development of rules, better tracking, and formal skill/safety standards associated with this particularly risky sailing activity. We anticipate resuming single-handing classes and allowing single-handed sailing in 2026. If you have questions about this pause, please contact the On-the-Water Standing Committee leaders, Manny Conde (manoelconde@yahoo.com) or Matt Smith (matthew.reese.smith@gmail.com).

New! Highly Experienced Sailors Accelerated Process

Becoming a Skipper at Sail Chicago

At Sail Chicago, becoming a Skipper isn’t taken lightly—and for good reason. As a volunteer-run organization, safety and leadership are top priorities. To earn your Skipper status, you must complete the course sequence: Crew, First Mate, Skipper Prep and then pass the On-the-Water (OTW) Skill Standards Assessment (during your last Skipper Prep course or during a mid-season make-up skipper check out). After your OTW assessment, you’ll get an automated email with next steps.

You’ll need to complete the following items:

— Pass the US Sailing Basic Keelboat Exam (80 questions/80% correct to pass)

— Pass the Sail Chicago Rules & Policies Exam (33 questions)

Sign the New Skipper Attestation

— Book 3 Private Sails as the skipper of record with at least one other Sail Chicago Skipper aboard as crew.

That’s it! Once these steps are complete, you can rent any of the Colgate 26 boats on your own. Also, if you are curious about other boats in our fleet, contact the boat managers for the Ideal 18s or the Rhodes 19s. These are smaller and more agile boats that are fast and a lot of fun to sail! Or, sign up for the First-mate Cruising class to learn more about our larger 34’ Cruisers!

What a great day on the water!

I'm a New Skipper...Now What?

For new skippers/soon to be new skippers, congratulations! You've reached the end of our learn-to-sail classes and passed all your exams. Now what?

First, complete your three sails as “skipper of record”! All new skippers must complete three private sails as the “skipper of record” with another Sail Chicago skipper in attendance. Reach out to your fellow new skippers or other skippers you've met at events and ask them to join you. When your fellow new skippers ask for a skipper to be their first mate, volunteer to go along. Slack is also a great place to find skippers happy to share a sail. Meet people, continue to practice, and get out on the water.

Next, think about becoming a program skipper. Remember when you were new to Sail Chicago, waiting for your first class, and you were able to get out on the water for a sail by signing up for a Member Cruise Outing? Or when you were a student looking to practice, and you signed up for Tiller Times? Pay it forward! We rely on volunteers. Plus, there's no charge for you to reserve a boat for an MCO or Tiller Time—you sail for free. Look over the requirements for MCO and Tiller Time Skippers, and get in touch with our coordinators.

Racing News

Racers, the Rainbow Regatta is July 12 at Monroe Harbor, 1pm start. Although this event is designed to accommodate new racers, lots of experienced sailors also participate. We have three or four Colgates set to race. If we get five they will have a dedicated start for our class. Anyone wanting to race may reserve a Colgate and register at rainbowraces.org. Or, contact tom.hafner@sailchicago.org. I will attempt to link up crew with skippers.

The Verve inshore is set for August 23 and 24, at Belmont Harbor. It's two days of racing, and a big party Saturday night at CYC Belmont. All boats should have experienced racing skippers. Feel free to register at vervecup.com/inshore or email tom.hafner@sailchicago.org to be added to my list of people looking for boats and boats looking for people.

Ever wonder what it's like to be at the helm, run the foredeck, or set strategy for the starting line? You get to try out every position while expanding your skill set. Interested in Instruction?

The Instructor Prep class gets you ready to teach at Sail Chicago! Candidates should have a minimum of two years skipper experience with Sail Chicago, and be confident and competent sailors. Prep begins with the Sail Chicago Skills and Standards for the Colgate 26 Instructor Exam. Candidates will then shadow a minimum of one Sail Chicago instructor and complete a shadow form. This is followed by two OTW classes with a Sail Chicago Instructor Trainer (certified Basic Keelboat Instructor). Instructor trainers will share learning practices that make Sail Chicago's classes safe and fun. Candidates will then demonstrate those practices. Finally, candidates will conduct a Tiller Time sail while being observed by Instructor Mentors. The Mentor then completes an observation form, gives solid feedback, and makes recommendations on improving teaching style.

Classes open soon, and beginning this year, we're offering this class free of charge!  There is limited space, so start planning now! Contact leadinstructor@sailchicago.org.

Need to Cancel a Reservation?

Plans change—we get it! If you've booked a Private Sail, Tiller Time, or Cruise, you can easily cancel your reservation through your my.sailchicago.org dashboard:

Go to the My Upcoming Reservations section. Find the reservation you'd like to cancel. Click Change in the top right corner. Select Cancel from the menu.

Note: Tiller Time reservations must be canceled at least 24 hours before the start time to receive a credit refund.

Mid-season Skipper Check-outs

Have you completed your Skipper Prep course and received a Plan of Improvement (POI) instead of passing? Don’t worry—it's simply part of the learning process. Sail Chicago’s goal is to help you build the skills and confidence needed to skipper safely and successfully. So what’s next?

Practice with purpose: Sign up for Tiller Times and let your instructor know exactly what you want to work on—refine your approach, read the wind, or sharpen your boat handling skills. If your Tiller Time credits are all used, you can still join sessions with space available within 48 hours of the sail date. Or, join others on cruise outings or maintenance sails: Jump on a private sail with others to get more practice.

Ready for another try? Once you’ve had time to practice and feel confident, sign up for a Mid-Season Make-Up Skipper Check-out. We’ve scheduled these for July 10, July 19 and October 1 with more dates to follow. You'll enroll through your mysailchicago.org portal with a special passcode. Contact your instructor for the code to register.

Leaving the Can Tip!

While skippering a recent Tiller Time, Max Maizels noticed this common mistake. The photo shows the foredeck person has placed the eye of the lazy line over the port bow cleat, and the eye of the active line in the water. Since there is no mooring line eye over the boat's wand, this setup will make return to can difficult. Rather than simply lifting the wand to retrieve the mooring line, the foredeck person will need to raise the wand and then struggle to grasp the line.

For more information, a companion video is posted on in slack channel #video.

The TellTale June 2025

Sail Chicago Tell Tale
Issue 6: June 2025

From the Board

Registration

This past April, the board approved a new governance structure for Sail Chicago. We've established six new Standing Committees that oversee all of our programming, and each of these is led by two of our board members. These committees are:

Administration (Fiona Ray and Chad Skarpiak)
Rules and Regulations, Information Technology, Licensing, Insurance, Required Annual Filings (except tax forms)

Community (Shawn Joseph and Rachel Park)
DEI, Social, External Partners, Marketing, Volunteering, Membership Surveys, Membership Communication

Finance (Tim Rice and Adam Hinz)
Budgets, Financial Reports, required annual financial filings (tax forms)

Maintenance (Matt Bone and Ashleigh Luttery)
All maintenance programs (Colgates, Small Keelboats, Cruisers)

On the Water (Manny Conde and Matt Smith)
All Instruction, Member Cruise Outings, Tiller Times, Racing, Private Sails

Safety (Gerry Stacy and Adam Jabs)
Review of Incidents/Accidents, Safety Reports

It's our hope that this structure will provide more direct oversight of our programs and will provide a tighter connection between our leadership and all the things we do. We're also hoping that this structure will provide more opportunities for YOU, our members, to get involved with running our organization. If you have questions about any of our program areas or if you think you'd like to help out with one of our committees, feel free to reach out to our committee leaders.

Become a Tiller Time Skipper!

Currently seeking skippers for Sail Chicago’s Tiller Time program. The program’s mission is to provide meaningful practice for current students outside of the regular class structure, allowing them to more quickly improve their sailing skills so they can advance to skipper status. As a Tiller Time skipper, you become a vital link in this process. The advantages to being a Tiller Time skipper include:

— Sharing your love of sailing with committed and enthusiastic students
— Spending more time on the water without having to schedule a private sail
— Making new friends and sailing buddies
— Helping you decide if you’d like to become an instructor

Also, completing five Tiller Times as a skipper fulfills your annual service requirement. To learn more and to find out if you’re eligible to become a Tiller Time skipper, contact Steve VanderVoort at tillertime@sailchicago.org.

New Skippers — Pay it Forward

To those who skippered out in 2024, congratulations! Its now time to help new sailors who are just getting started. New skippers traditionally volunteer as presenters at Pre-Sail Orientations. PSOs are important prep for new students and members learning about what makes Sail Chicago special. PSOs also provide key safety information before students take their first on-the-water class. Presenting takes about 20 minutes and uses Sail Chicago’s existing presentation slides as a guide. It's easy and fun!

DM our PSO coordinator, Nina Wheeler, on Slack to sign up for one of the following virtual PSOs:
Tues, July 1, 5:30-7pm by Zoom
Thurs, July 17, 5:30-7pm by Zoom

Thinking About Teaching?

Sail Chicago is a one-of-a-kind, volunteer-driven organization, and that’s what makes it special. If you're a confident and capable sailor, have you ever considered sharing your skills by teaching? Here’s how:

Start with Tiller Times. For new members, getting practice on the water can be a challenge. You can make a real difference by becoming a Tiller Time Skipper and helping to provide valuable, informal instruction and practice opportunities for students.

The next step, If you’ve been a Sail Chicago skipper for at least two years and have run six or more Tiller Times, you may be eligible for our Instructor Prep Course. This course prepares experienced sailors to become On-the-Water (OTW) Instructors with Sail Chicago. Instructor Candidates will:
— Shadow experienced instructors
— Attend two OTW classes
— Student-teach a class with a mentor instructor during a Tiller Time sail

Reach out to Monte Lewis at monte@lewisadvantage.com if you’re interested in joining the instruction team! Help keep Sail Chicago strong, supportive, and student-centered — both on and off the water!

The TellTale May 2025

Sail Chicago Tell Tale
Issue 5: May 2025

Sailing season is upon us, and with the boats heading to the harbor, now is the time to dust off your sailing gear. Six of eight Colgates are now on their mooring cans in Monroe Harbor, waiting to be rigged. Weather continues to slow progress but we are getting there!
— Meighan Depke, Editor

Pre-Sail Orientation

With sailing classes about to begin, a reminder — before attending the first class, new students are required to attend a Pre-Sail Orientation (PSO). This is an opportunity to learn about Sail Chicago as an organization, find out what is expected for class, meet some seasoned members of the club, and ask questions. Sign up for a PSO on the my.sailchicago.org portal under Instruction > Course Availability. The 90-minute course is available in-person or virtual, so find a date and time that works for you. For questions, please email our PSO Coordinator, Nina Wheeler, at pso@sailchicago.org

Waitlist for Classes

Registration for the 2025 season is complete and all classes are full. If you signed up for the lottery but weren’t able to register, your name has been added to the appropriate waitlist. Students who were able to register for their chosen class have also been added to the waitlist for the next class in sequence. Waitlist order was determined by the number assigned in the registration lottery and are now posted on the Sail Chicago Data Hub.

From the Safety Committee

After a long winter, the sailing season is finally here! Soon we'll all be heading to the harbor to board our boats. Skippers, as you gear up and get ready to set sail, here are a few important reminders:

Always Check your Boat's Status Before you head to the harbor, log on to my.sailchicago.org and review the status of your boat on the Fleet Status page. Are there any issues or warnings that you should be aware of? More importantly, has your boat been taken out of service? Remember, you are responsible for knowing the maintenance status of your boat. Sailing a boat that is out of service is the same as sailing a boat without a reservation. This is a serious rule infraction.

And while you're on my.sailchicago.org, take a moment to review the current wind/wave conditions and the weather forecast for your sail.

Carefully Complete the Pre- and Post-Sail Checklists The checklists are an essential and required part of every sail you do. They ensure that you have put eyes on and assessed your boat’s critical systems and safety equipment before setting sail, and that you consistently close up the boat after sailing completes. These checklists are also the primary way skippers communicate maintenance issues — even small ones — to our boat maintenance team. Remember, failing to complete the checklists is an infraction of Sail Chicago rules.

Proceed with Caution We're all eager to get out on the water, but for most of us, it's been at least six months since our last sail. Our skills are rusty!  Keep that in mind as you head out on your first sails of the season. Bring along another skipper or experienced crew. Use careful judgement about the wind and wave forecast, and be conservative in estimating your own skills. Let's make sure our sailing this summer is safe and fun — see you out on the water!

Race with Sail Chicago!

Racing officially starts on Wednesday June 11. Can't wait? You don't have to. Racing Tiller Times are back and will start Wednesday May 14. You need to register to race or do racing tiller times. Registration is $100 and covers all twelve races.

There's a "racing" Slack channel where more detailed updates will pop up from time to time. Or if you don't Slack, you can email us at race@sailchicago.org, although that email isn't checked as often as the slack channels are. We are also hosting a racing happy hour on June 12 for additional racing information or check out our racing page at Sail Chicago racing. You can also sign up on Sail Chicago > course availability.

Reminder: Time Policies

Tiller Times are one of the most important ways that students can practice their skills, and all students are strongly encouraged to take advantage of them. Unfortunately, demand is high, and available Tiller Times are limited. Here's a reminder about our Tiller Time policy:

1. Every student is limited to four (4) Tiller Times per season. You will not be able to sign up in advance for more than four.

2. If you cancel your seat on a Tiller Time with less than 24 hours notice, it will count toward one of your four Tiller Times.

3. However, if you sign up for a Tiller Time less than 24 hours in advance, it will NOT count towards one of your four Tiller Times.

Students should practice as much as they can, and we want to make sure that everyone has a chance!

Remember to join the #tillertime channel on Slack.  As Tiller Times become available for signup, notice will be posted there.

Cruising 2025!

Sail Chicago has big updates to its 2025 Cruising Program! Building on a strong cruising foundation, we’re bringing the Basic Keelboat program structure to our cruising program to make it easier to get started, easier to practice, and easier to grow. The previous six-session cruising class is being replaced with the following:

Cruising First Mate is an introduction for sailors new to cruising. You’ll get familiar with the boat and build confidence as part of a crew (4 sessions).

Cruising Skipper Prep is for those ready to be evaluated as a skipper. This class focuses on the full range of skills needed to safely take out a boat on your own. Confident students can then be checked-out as new cruising skippers (4 sessions).

Practice: One of the best ways to get time on the water is through Cruising Tiller Times. We also plan to designate a first mate for each cruising class and other program/private sails. This is great way to get time at the helm and learn what it takes to lead a class. If you’re thinking about teaching tiller times or becoming an instructor, this is a great place to start.

Greater Alignment with US Sailing: This year Sail Chicago will be taking steps to align its program with US Sailing’s Basic Cruising Curriculum. Our past cruising class has primarily focused on Sail Chicago boats, but in 2025 we are expanding to prepare skippers to command other cruising boats in various waters and conditions.

These changes mark an exciting moment in the evolution of Sail Chicago’s cruising program and will make cruising available to more of our members, expand practice, and create a rich pipeline of competent and confident cruising skippers. See you on the water!

Annual Dues

It’s time to pay your Sail Chicago annual dues if you have not done so already. Members must renew their dues before they can participate in member activities, including pre-season maintenance, river trips, and the Season Kickoff party in May. Have you ever thought about racing? It's fun, is held in a welcoming environment, and it's an excellent way to hone your skills. This year we hope to make it easy to join, learn, and have fun.

Sail Chicago plans to offer racing tiller times where members can learn how to rig, fly, and douse the spinnaker. We will cover the basics of racing, how to round marks, racing-only right of way rules, tactics, and more. The hope is to have seminars, videos, and on-the-water practicums, taught by some of our own amazing racers along with outsiders for more advanced topics.

If interested, join our Slack channel "racing" for updates. Those interested in helping (host a racing tiller time, share your racing expertise in a seminar, get involved with the videos, recommend experts), hop on the slack channel to let us know or DM Tom Hafner or James McLaughlin.

2025 On the Water Classes

Sail Chicago’s Instruction Team is busy planning the 2025 schedule. As in past years, we will offer on-the-water classes in a three course sequence. These are Crew, First Mate, and Skipper Prep. Each course meets weekly for four weeks. Last year we had over 50 classes in total. We hope to be able to offer even more this season. See our current course listings for more information.

Prior to the first class, enrolled students must complete:
Sail Chicago's Pre-Sail Orientation (PSO)
US Sailing's Basic Keelboat online course and test.
Information can be found on Sail Chicago’s Instruction webpage.

Already a Colgate skipper? We have other boats as well! Sail Chicago's fleet includes three 19' Rhodes, two 18' Ideals, and two 34' Cruising boats. The TellTale: March 2025

Sail Chicago Tell Tale
Issue 3: March 2025

Class Registration Begins in April

A new season of sailing is almost here, and it begins with the rollout of our schedule of classes! New and returning students can find information about the class rollout and registration timeline on our website. Our class schedule will post the last week of March. As in the past, students who have taken classes with Sail Chicago previously will be allowed to pre-register for their next class in early April. Lottery signups will open on April 1, and individuals in the lottery will be notified of their registration window no later than April 14. Please carefully read our Class Registration and Cancellation Policy for all the information you need to know about selecting classes and meeting our prerequisites.

From the Volunteer Team
Gerry Stacy, Chairman

Hello Sail Chicago! Volunteer reporting for 2024 has finished up, and service time status is set. You can check your status on your member landing page when you log into my.sailchicago.org. Sailing credits for those that served in leadership and management positions have also been added. If you feel there is an error with your volunteering account for last season, or if you forgot to report your hours, please get in touch with the volunteer team at volunteer@sailchicago.org.

Looking ahead, there are many opportunities to fulfill your service time in 2025 that can take advantage of skills and abilities you already have, or even teach you something new. Our volunteer site now shows all positions available for 2025. If when reporting last year’s volunteer hours you indicated an interest in continuing in your current role, you've probably been re-assigned to that position. If your position was eliminated due to the 2025 reorganization of our maintenance program, you should have received an e-mail regarding this change. Please check the data hub for your current assignments.

If you’re considering joining Sail Chicago as a new member, remember that your service time requirement is waived for your first year.

Returning members, if you don’t have time to meet your 2025 service time requirement, please contact volunteer@sailchicago.org. The volunteer team can adjust your account to show the “service time waiver” so that when you renew your membership you can pay to waive your volunteer time for the current season.

Remember, if you fail to meet your 2025 service time requirement, either because you didn’t volunteer for a position or you failed to fulfill the responsibilities of the position you were assigned, you will be required to pay a service time waiver for the 2025 season before you can renew your membership in 2026.

There are plenty of volunteer opportunities available each season, and many of them can be carried out in just a few hours each month. If you're not sure where to start or what you'd like to do, reach out to the volunteer team at volunteer@sailchicago.org.

Boatyard Open House

Join your friends and other members at the Canal Street Marina, 2059 South Canal St., on Saturday April 5, 10am–12pm. This is a great opportunity to see our entire fleet dry docked. 2025 On the Water Classes

Hello Sailors! With the recent blast of warm air many of us are starting to think about summer and Sail Chicago is busy at work planning the 2025 schedule. At Sail Chicago, we offer an on-the-water three course sequence to “skipper-out" on a Colgate. These classes are called Crew, First Mate, and Skipper Prep. Each course meets once a week for four weeks. Last year, we had over 50 classes in total. We hope to be able to offer even more this season.

Remember all students enrolled in any Sail Chicago course must meet the following prior to the first class.

1. Have completed the Sail Chicago Pre-Sail Orientation (PSO) online course

2. Have completed the US Sailing Basic Keelboat online course and passed the online test. More information can be found on Sail Chicago’s Instruction webpage. Be sure to pick up a copy of the Sail Chicago On the Water (OTW) Skill Standards Reference Manual to prepare you for the season.

Are you already a Colgate skipper? Did you know we have other boats as well? Sail Chicago's fleet includes three 19' Rhodes, two 18' Ideals, and two 34' Cruising boats. Once you've skippered out on a Colgate, you can expand your sailing skills on the bigger and smaller boats in the fleet! We are re-vamping the Cruising Instruction and Curriculum this year to focus on building skills and confidence to take out one of our 34' cruising boats. We look forward to seeing you all on the water!

The TellTale: February 2025

Hello, World!

Sail Chicago Tell Tale
Issue 2: February 2025

Unfortunately February isn't the best time of year for sailors, but it IS a great time to plan your Sail Chicago participation! Sign up for winter, spring, and summer maintenance and keep your eye on Slack for upcoming social events. It's a time to stay warm and plan for a great season of sailing. Also, for those wondering about changes at the TellTale, we have decided to drop the newsletter on the first Tuesday of each month, rather than Saturday.

—Meighan Depke, Editor

Volunteer Reporting Continues
Gerry Stacy, Chairman

Volunteer reporting is still open, and we have over 50 members who haven't yet completed their reports. Please report your volunteer hours from 2024 today!

At this point you should have received multiple e-mail reminders from the volunteer team in charge of your volunteer positions for 2024. Click through each position, provide an estimate of the hours you spent doing the work, and tell us know if you would like to keep that position in 2025. If we missed any volunteering that you did, you'll be able to indicate that also. We will close the reporting process after March 1, record service time flags for 2024, and open the volunteer site to signups for 2025. If you have questions about volunteering or the reporting process, please contact volunteer@sailchicago.org.

The Sail Chicago 2025 Scholarship Application is Live!

The DEI Committee is continuing our scholarship program as part of Sail Chicago’s commitment to increase diversity, equity, and inclusivity among its members within the organization as well as in the sport of sailing. The goal is to promote the sport of sailing to groups that have historically faced barriers to participation, such as people of color in the United States and people from low socioeconomic households. These barriers have included racial segregation in/exclusion from boating clubs, actual or perceived lack of access or acceptance, and/or high costs of participation in the sport.

The application is now live through March 3, 2025. Recipients will participate in SC’s beginner Crew classes (including Pre-Sail Orientation and US Sailing Basic Keelboat online course fees), have membership fees covered, along with priority access to class sign up. Scholarship recipients will also have Racing sign up fees covered if they complete their Crew course and would like to try Racing!

Please share within your network to all who may be interested in applying!

Our Annual Meeting is Moving!

In order to maximize member participation in the annual business of Sail Chicago, the Board has decided to move our Annual Meeting to coincide with our end-of-season dinner. This is when membership is at its highest and our new members have had the summer to get to know the organization and leadership. You can look forward to the annual elections of board members at that time. This spring, Sail Chicago will host a membership meeting just before our kick-off happy hour. Be on the lookout for a "save the date" in May for that event, and join us as we celebrate the start of the sailing season.

Maintenance Volunteer Opportunities

If you haven’t signed up for maintenance yet, now is the time!

Winter/spring: Boatyard volunteers are needed to prepare the fleet for the upcoming season. We meet every Saturday (February through April) from 10am to 2pm, weather permitting. Watch for announcements in Slack for sign-ups.

Summer: The RIB Maintenance Team still needs a few RIB Crew members. Qualification are must be First Mate and two years working in maintenance. Contact Rich Costello in Slack to sign up.

Spring and fall river trips along with mast stepping/un-stepping will be the same as last year, and we will utilize SignUp Genius once we have firm dates. Specialty Teams (electrical, essential equipment, and tops/bottom hull repairs) will also be the same as last year.

Basic Navigation Course

April 26 and 27
9am to 4pm at Columbia Yacht Club

This season's course will teach sailors basic navigation skills and techniques that can be used within sight of land. Its primary focus is on the use of paper charts and will teach sailors how to read a chart and its symbols, convert between true and magnetic readings, plot course and position, calculate time/speed/distance, and take bearings and fixes. In addition, there will be a brief review of some basic information on chart plotters. Completion of this course is a prerequisite for Sail Chicago's Bareboat Cruising class. Note that sailors must attend both days. The course will be listed on the Sail Chicago website for sign-up

Social News

It’s never too early to mark your calendar for the season kickoff party! Catch up with old friends, make new sailing buddies and celebrate the start of the sailing season. We'll have food, drinks, games and more. Signup for the event will be available in the March Tell Tale so watch your inbox!

Kickoff party at ColYC:
Saturday, May 17, 3-6pm

Remembering Guy Whitney

Guy Whitney, a Sail Chicago member from the early days of the organization’s formation, passed away peacefully on January 23. Sail Chicago old-timers will remember him as a tough old salt who wouldn’t tolerate any nonsense. He was on the Sail Chicago Board for several years, and was in charge of maintenance when we had only Rhodes 19s and a couple of cruising boats in our fleet. Younger members might remember him as one of the tender drivers who helped us get to our boats in Monroe Harbor throughout the summer months.

Guy was born in Paris, France and fell in love with sailing at an early age. He was a longtime member of the Corinthian Yacht Club out of Montrose Harbor, when he had his own Rhodes 19 as a part of the Club’s Rhodes fleet.

The TellTale: December 2024

Hello, World!

Sail Chicago Tell Tale
Issue 11: December 2024

Wishing each and every Sail Chicago member a peaceful Holiday Season and Happy New Year!  — Meighan Depke, Editor

Help Our Multimedia Crew

Interested in helping with Sail Chicago's Instagram page or YouTube channel? The multimedia team has decided to use Instagram as a way to communicate our message as volunteer-driven, community sailing organization. The channel will be specific to videos about instruction tips that are unique to Sail Chicago and its' fleet of boats. Please reach out to Adi amenayang@gmail.com or Doug ddsink@icloud.com if you are interested in helping out. In the meantime, check out the new Sail Chicago channel.

New Instruction Team Leaders

Season 2025 will have new instruction team leaders: Tom Hertel, Lead Instructor, and Brian Huang, Deputy Lead Instructor. Much thanks to the outgoing lead instructor, Monte Lewis who received an award recognizing his contribution at the annual dinner meeting on October. Season 2024 closed with 10% more learn to sail classes than 2023 and the student surveys show the sailing instruction program overall receives high scores.

Congrats to More 2024 New Sailors

The following sailors finished their Skipper Prep check-out and exams after our October Telltale was published, so this is a special congratulations to them and all the hard work they completed to becoming skippers. Looking forward to sailing with you in 2025: Alex Gardinier, Cole Mader, and Ronald Krema!

End of Year Dinner Wrap Up

Sail Chicago’s end of year dinner and auction was the most successful since the pandemic! We had 72 in attendance and raised $3,768 for the DEI scholarship program. Wow, thanks sailors! Over 20 items and experiences were donated, and many bidders got great deals on their purchases. The dinner was delicious and which offered a variety of entree options, including beef, chicken, fish and a vegan pasta. Our president, Gerry Stacy, and each committee chair spoke briefly about our 2024 accomplishments and the many records that were set. Also many thanks to the Social Team and all their great work, led by Deb and Jack Griffin who are passing the social lead torch to Emily Wilt, starting in 2025. All in all, 2024 ended in style!

Sailing Music for All Seasons

By Don Burman

As winter sets in some of us may be lucky enough to be planning sailing charters in the Virgin Islands or the South Pacific. Unfortunately, I am not one of them. Instead I can spend my winter months reading sailing books, reflecting on lessons learned this summer, and updating my sailing music playlist. Music helps me get though the off season. Many boaters playlists consist of the Marley and Buffett standards, but for me, these are island songs, not sailing themed songs. So here are a few of my favorites. I hope one or more of them bring you joy. If you have any favorite sailing oriented songs, please share them with me via DM on Slack. I am always looking to expand my list.

Livin’ Thing, Electric Light Orchestra; I’m Your Captain (Closer to Home), Grand Funk Railroad; Pirates, Emerson, Lake & Palmer; Drunken Sailor, The Irish Rovers; Sailing, Christopher Cross; Sail On, Sailor, The Beach Boys; Ride Captain Ride, Blue Image; (Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay, Otis Redding; Sloop John B, The Beach Boys; Calypso, John Denver; Day-O (The Banana Boat Song), Harry Belafonte; Southern Cross, Crosby, Stills & Nash; Into the Mystic, Van Morrison; Another New World, Punch Brothers; The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, Gordon Lightfoot…

The TellTale: January 2025

Sail Chicago Tell Tale
Issue 1: January 2025

It’s Volunteer Reporting Time
Gerry Stacy, Chairman

Happy New Year, and farewell to 2024! Thank you to all our members who gave so much of their time last year to keep our organization running. We all enjoyed another great summer of sailing because of you.

Now that 2024 is over, we all have one last job to do and that’s to complete our volunteer reporting. This is an important step in our annual volunteering process because it:

— Helps maintain accurate volunteer and position records
— Confirms that members met their 2024 service time requirement
— Lets Sail Chicago know if you want to continue in your current volunteer position in 2025
— Gives an estimate of how much time our members are spending volunteering.

Members should have already received an email from the volunteer team listing your assigned positions for 2024. Click through each position, provide an estimate of the hours you spent doing the work, and tell us if you would like to keep that position in 2025. If we missed any volunteering that you did, you’ll be able to indicate that also.

Please complete your reports as soon as you can after receiving them. We will close the reporting process after March 1, record service time flags for 2024, and open the volunteer site to signups for 2025. Remember, any volunteering you do after January 1 counts toward your service time requirement for this coming summer and your membership renewal in 2026.

If you have any questions about volunteering or the reporting process, please contact the volunteer team at volunteer@sailchicago.org.

Sail Chicago Has a New Boat!

Sail Chicago’s new boat is a 15.5-foot used Novurania Fiberglass with Hypalon inflatable pontoons and a 90hp Yamaha outboard motor. This boat is to be used primarily as a Maintenance Utility Rigid Inflatable Boat (RIB). It will be docked in a 30’ slip at Belmont Harbor during the summer, close to a hydraulic lift (for stepping and un-stepping masts) and a marine-grade fuel pump for re-fueling our fleet of Colgate and Rhodes.

Come see it up close in the boatyard on Saturday, April 5, 10am-12pm at Sail Chicago's 3rd annual Open House in the Boatyard!

Sail Chicago Maintenance 2025

Big changes are coming this season, made possible by the recent acquisition of our Maintenance Utility RIB.

Summer Colgate boat teams will be replaced this summer with RIB Maintenance teams. These teams will be responsible for refueling, restocking supplies, VHF batteries, and all repairs. Multiple weekly scheduled runs will be made from Belmont Harbor to Monroe Harbor. Each team will make one run per week and service all boats. Having the Maintenance Utility RIB makes this possible and will help us to be more efficient and consistent by allowing us to service all boats simultaneously.

Last year, we utilized a hydraulic crane located on the North end of Belmont Harbor to step and un-step Colgate masts. We will do the same this year. Dock space is plentiful, and the procedure is much safer. This also reduces the number of volunteers needed from 10 to 6 per session.

Maintenance Volunteer Opportunities

If you have been counting, yes, we have eliminated nearly 80 maintenance volunteer positions between the Boat Teams and mast step/un-step. However, 20-30 new positions have been created for the RIB Maintenance Teams, and up to 20 positions have always been left unfilled each year. The winter/spring boatyard work offers unlimited opportunities to learn maintenance techniques and satisfy your volunteer hours requirement.

Available Now: 3-4 virtual positions for processing work orders, data entry, and analysis. Contact Rich Costello via Slack.

Winter/spring: Boatyard volunteers are needed to prepare the fleet for the upcoming season. We meet every Saturday (February through April) from 10am to 2pm, weather permitting. Watch for announcements in Slack for sign-ups (available soon). These sign-ups are your best chance to satisfy volunteer requirements early.

Summer: The RIB Maintenance Team (new) sign-up will take place in March. RIB Skippers must be trained and checked out on the RIB. We anticipate 10 RIB Skippers and 10 RIB Crew. Watch for announcements in Slack.

Spring and fall river trips along with mast stepping/un-stepping will be the same as last year, and we will utilize SignUp Genius once we have firm dates. Specialty Teams (electrical, essential equipment, and tops/bottom hull repairs) will also be the same as last year.

Please monitor Slack closely so that you can get the volunteer job you want before it is taken. We will be on the water before you know it!

For questions or comments, please DM Richard Costello, Maintenance Coordinator, in Slack.

The course dates are yet to be determined, but will fall on a Saturday and Sunday, from 9am to 4pm at Columbia Yacht Club, most likely in February. Note that sailors must attend both days. To gauge attendance, please send a slack note to cruising director Chris Schuler. Once class dates are scheduled, we will list the course on the Sail Chicago website for sign-up.

Prevent the Winter Blues!

Wondering what to do this winter while you wait for sailing weather? Member Ed Stasica recommends a visit to Port Edward Restaurant in Algonquin, a unique dining experience where they take nautical decor seriously. While there, enjoy one of his recommended books: The Perfect Storm by Sebastian Junger; God Forsaken Sea by Derek Lundy; or Fatal Storm by Rob Mundle.
